Our Shop
Over 5000 square feet of workspace, heated by wood in the winter and cooled by breezes in the summer is powered by a diesel engine that runs a drive shaft of over a hundred feet. Woodworking machines are engaged by connected clutches and drive belts. An efficient vacuum/blower system whisks away dust and wood chips to an outdoor bin where the dust and chips are collected and then used for bedding for the animals. The scrap wood pieces from the shop fuel the wood stove and the water heater in their home.
Wood & Finishes
With a great deal of high quality timber in the area, most of our hardwoods are sourced within the local region, including from our own woods. Some species such a walnut are from points farther south while premium cherry and cedar are often from northeastern states.
Harvesting trees sustainably is a meticulous process that prioritizes the health of the trees and the preservation of wildlife habitats. This approach not only ensures the longevity of forests but also fosters a deep connection to the land. From managing forest health to carefully selecting which trees to harvest, every step is taken with reverence for nature. As John Mark and his sons engage in the process, they bring an intimate understanding of the wood they work with. In their workshop, they can recognize the unique characteristics of each piece, a testament to their dedication to sustainability and their commitment to enhancing the quality of their craft at every stage, from the forest to the finished product. This holistic approach is not just a practice; it's a rewarding journey of stewardship and craftsmanship.
Our finishes are formaldehyde free conversion varnish with a high build and superb durability that produces a silky smoothness that begs to be caressed.
Our approach to wood finishes is rooted in enhancing the natural beauty of each piece while respecting the unique characteristics of the wood. Clear finishes are typically employed for most woods, allowing their inherent grain patterns and textures to shine through. However, for select woods such as 1/4 sawn white oak and particularly elm, stains are carefully chosen to accentuate their distinctive features. These stains are thoughtfully applied to bring out the best in these specific woods, highlighting their intricate grain patterns and rich hues. Through meticulous craftsmanship and an eye for detail, we ensure that our wood finishes not only protect but also elevate the inherent beauty of the wood.
Due to hand selected woods, each urn will have a unique grain pattern and individual qualities.
